A huge congratulations, thank you and well done to the Turner and Townsend Spartans for last weekend. Not only have you raised a whopping £1670.99 for SANDS Lothians so far but you also completed the 12k+ course, 26 obstacles, 6 Pentland hills, 3 swims, 3.5 ton of mud and all the heavy lifting obstacles at the end, which included:
Brick carry, finishing with 8 tractor tyre flips
· An incline muddy climb carrying a 20lb sand bag for the girls & 40lbs for the... boys
· A-Frame climb followed by 3-sided wall climb (rock climbing style)
· Pulling a breeze block on a metal chain around a gravel path
· A log carry up and down a muddy hill, ending with a wade through a muddy pond......
· Oh and finishing with a 8ft then 10ft wall climb with a final jump over a fire pit!!!
Hope you are all recovering now. We think you are amazing!
What a privileged job I have to witness first hand people's kindness and compassion.
Today I returned after a holiday and came back to many gifts!
1) A large box of beautiful knitting from SQA Knutty Knitters and a lovely letter enclosed. I have to admit to crying on opening the box as the gifts so beautifully presented and I know they will give much comfort to the families in the hospital. Thank you Carole Lomas and your team for your continued kindness, time and thoughtfulness. You are true angels.
2) A huge thank you to Ann and Billy Graham who kindly donated their sofa for our befriending room. Ann and Billy are grandparents to Harry and Daniel who were stillborn 5 years ago. Their daughter Lee is involved helping the charity fundraise and talks to medical students and at training. The family wanted to give something back to say thanks.
3) Thanks also to Gillian (one of our befrienders) for her kind gift of a coffee machine. This will be most welcome by the team, visitors to the office and bereaved families.
Thanks to you all for all you do to support the charity. I'm off to make myself a cappuccino now!
A gentle reminder that our annual service this year takes place on Sunday 7th December 2014 at 2pm in Craiglockhart Parish Church, Craiglockhart Drive North, Edinburgh, EH14 1HS.
We will be reading our precious babies names out at the service so please do let us know if you are unable to attend but would still like your babies name to be read.
Refreshments will be served after the service in the church hall.
Due to the solemn nature of our service we respectfully ask that no babies or young children are in attendance. Thank You.
We are happy to announce we have recieved a Grant from The Moffat Charitable Trust which will fund the salary of our Admin Assistant for the next 12 months. Excellent news for us as our admin assistant does a vital role for our charity.
Read how SANDS Lothians has helped a bereaved parent 16 years after the stillbirth of her son Cameron. Gillian wasn't given photographs, hand or footprints or the support that parents are given now. Sadly Gillian was affected by the Mortonhall baby scandal and this shook her world again and led her to contact ourselves for the first time. After calling the hospital for medical records she then received (unexpectedly) hand and footprints through the door in a brown envelope which had been stored in medical records all this time. After attending our Mother's Day event this year where Smallprint Fingerprint Jewellery UK had a stall Gillian is now the proud owner of beautiful and very precious jewellery. Gillians story ...
In December 2012 I picked up the Evening News in work, to read the headline story about babies ashes at Mortonhall. I was stunned and shocked that this affected me as my son Cameron was born sleeping at 40 weeks on 19 March 1999 and cremated at Mortonhall. I had been advised at his cremation that there were no ashes from baby cremations!
I was all over the place and didn’t really know where to turn or what to do, until a friend had suggested SANDS Lothians in West Lothian. My initial thought that this would not be for me as it was some time since I had my loss. However, I attended my first group meeting around February/March time and didn’t know what to expect. I was made to feel very welcome and didn’t have to tell my story if I didn’t want to. I felt so comforted that I was able to share my story and my experience and it was as though a cloud had been lifted.
From that moment on I felt that I had a second family who knew what I felt and what I was going through and supported me. I have attended most monthly meetings since that first one and have found them an invaluable release.
I decided that I wanted to give something back and held a charity football match, in which I played! We raised around £900 which I was delighted with. I also decided to undertake befriending training and attended the 2 day intensive course run by SANDS UK in June 2014. I am now a fully trained befriender and this is something I feel very proud of and is very important to me. I like to think that because I am 16 years down the line with my loss that I can give others the hope that it will get easier. You never forget but the pain gets easier to deal with and understand. You are also more in tune with your feelings and accept that it is ok to have a bad day!
I have also been involved in sharing my story with trainee doctors at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh which is a hugely empowering experience. It gives me the opportunity to voice the opinions of bereaved parents and feedback on the care they have received from medical professionals and how this can be influenced in the future.
I want to be able to provide whatever support I can to this charity as it means so much to me and is a very important lifeline to grieving parents. I hope to attend the enhanced befriender training later in the year and will look at ways to help in any other capacity I can.
Thank you Gillian for all you do now to voluntarily help others
In Remembrance. Lest We Forget
Reported today that parts of report on Mortonhall Crematorium to be censored, click here for full article
We have now interviewed 150 witnesses with more scheduled for July. The investigation is at slightly different stages in each of the 14 crematoria as the number of cases registered with us at each varies considerably. Investigative interviews with parents will recommence after the school holiday period. In order to manage the scope of our report we will continue to accept new cases until 30 September 2015. Anyone coming forward after that date will be referred to the relevant cremation authority. We are grateful in particular to parents for understanding that the information we can release at this stage of the investigation is limited as we do not wish to deter other witnesses from coming forward. We are sharing this update with cremation authority contacts and parent support organisations and encourage anyone who has not yet come forward to do so as soon as possible
We would like to say a big thank you to 3 parents who were very kind to speak with students from St Augustine's High and Holyrood High Schools on Thursday as part of the YPI project in Scotland. Shona Mair, Tracy Watt and Gillian Henderson, you all done so well in speaking so openly and honestly with the students, helping to make them feel at ease with asking their questions and sharing the precious thoughts & memories of your babies. This all helps us to keep raising awareness of the needs of bereaved parents in society and we thank both schools for choosing SANDS Lothians, Good luck in your presentations St Augustine's and Holyrood High.

A candle lit in our office today at SANDS Lothians to remember all our babies with love xx
We were hoping to be involved in setting up a SANDS group in the Borders again. The Borders General did approach us about this. The plan was to have a service of remembrance in the hospital and if there was enough interest we would organise a befriending meeting within the hospital. Due to our workload within Edinburgh and the Lothians it is going to be impossible for us to get involved in this venture. I know we have a few parents based in the Borders and I was wondering if any parents would be interested in organising a small meet up. I am sure the hospital will allow the use of a room and we are happy to help with befriending training. We are also happy to offer support and ideas to get the group going. I know some of you will be disappointed that we are unable to become as involved as we had hoped to.
If you feel you could give some time to the development of this group can you e mail firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you

*Appreciate the time and detail put into all the donations

We are delighted that we are now able to show you photographs of our 2 new SANDS Lothians pool cars. This has been something which as Operations Manager I have always hoped to achieve and now it is reality it is wonderful for SANDS Lothians. Helen and I jointly secured funding and donation for this project to allow us to lease these vehicles for the next 2 years. It will make visits to hospitals, cemeteries, our charity shop and both our premises at Craiglockhart & Craigsfarm much more manageable for all staff and also a great way to raise awareness at fundraising events. A huge thank you to Thomas the director of Capital Vehicles in Livingston who was extremely helpful and sourced the best vehicles for our needs. Thank you also to Specialized Signwriters in Corstorphine who did the livery on both cars for a very reasonable price as we are a local charity. I am sure you will see our cars driving around our local community and we have already received a call from a parent who is coming to use our services after seeing the car. Thank you, Dorothy Operations Manager SANDS Lothians x
A huge well done and thank you to Lee Knowles and Robert Dewar who jumped out a plane for SANDS Lothians. Between them , they have raised just over £4,000!
Pleased to say they were still smiling after it!
We are delighted today to share with you the lovely photo of the Well that we have been able to donate through The Africa Trust by getting our water cooler and water for the SANDS office from AquAid.
Nice to share with you all how something we use as a charity helps another charity xx
I'd like to share with you a project I've been working on for the last 6 months for SANDS Lothians. The new West Lothian baby cemetery is in Linlithgow and I felt the families needed something there to give comfort and details of where to get help should they need it. The project was funded by Linlithgow Round Table, SANDS Lothians and money raised from Theo's 5th birthday fundraiser with my friends. I am extremely proud to see it fitted this week and I hope it will give years of comfort to many families who sadly have to visit this cemetery. I can't thank P Johnson & Company at Ratho Byres Forge enough for their skill, workmanship and help and the Round Table for their continued support. The bench will be there for many years and it's great to be able to support the community and others who find themselves facing the worst of times losing a baby. Thank you to all who donated and everyone involved. Nicola x
Congratulations to James McGhee who has been nominated local hero of the year within Sainsbury's where he works.
James and Maureen's baby Calum was stillborn in 2003 and sadly they suffered another loss in 2010 - a little girl named Lily. James has made it his mission to raise awareness of SANDS Lothians and baby loss via some of the following:
*supplies fresh flowers every week to our workplace in Craiglockhart
*has organised an annual bowling night since 2010 raising ove...r £5,500 for SANDS Lothians
*fundraising events in store
*openly talking about this type of loss to encourage others to communicate and raise awareness
James we think you are an absolute star and know Calum and Lily would be so proud of your efforts in memory of them. Thank you so much and well done on your award
*James is the one in the middle with the trophy in front of him!*

A great example of charity matching at work. Emma Bird held a fundraiser at Scottish Widows and raised an amazing £310. Her work matched it and doubled the money to £620 for SANDS Lothians. Thank you so much Emma and Scottish Widows. Remember and ask your employer if they charity match which might encourage you to put together a cake bake or coffee morning for us? Great way of raising funds with little effort and the bonus of eating cake!!
A big thank you also to students at St Augustine's RC High School who held a recent fundraiser and raised £60.
Another big thank you shout out to Ellen Quinn who you might remember made our lovely Easter bunnies and was selling them to raise money for us. Delighted to say the bunnies raised an incredible £433.
Thank you all so much - your support is invaluable x
Fantastic to be able to share with you a photo from the events Antonia Flockhart and John Cowan took part in for SANDS Lothians. They both completed The Alnwick 14 mile coastal run, Tough Mudder Yorkshire 12 miles/24 obstacles and the Scottish Half Marathon. Antonia and John were very passionate about raising the money for SANDS Lothians to help raise awareness of the charity as sadly know the heartache and devastation the loss of a baby has on a family. Their triple challenge has raised a massive £3,150 which will go towards helping and supporting bereaved parents across Edinburgh & Lothians. Well done Antonia and John, amazing achievement and one to be very proud of, many thanks from us all at SANDS Lothians.

A great weekend at the Sands, the stillbirth & neonatal death charity Scottish Network Day hosted by Tayside Sands. It was encouraging to hear from Laura Price (the Research and Information Officer) that the Scottish numbers for stillbirth are reducing and there is much work being done in this area via SANDS UK, AFFIRM and the Scottish Stillbirth Sub-Group. We also heard from Cheryl Titherly who is the new Improving Bereavement Care Manager and she spoke about the new traini...ng which will be delivered in Scotland to midwives, students and wider health professionals. Judith Abela spoke about the new befriending training and new guidelines for befrienders. Remember My Baby showed beautiful photos and DVD's put together by professional photographers who are volunteering their time to capture beautiful and precious photos for families throughout Scotland.
We left encouraged and enthused that we are part of a wider team working hard to see stillbirth rates reduce and to provide the very best support for bereaved families. Thank you to Tracy, Lianne, Lynsey, Ros and Gillian for attending with me. Nicola
A positive meeting today at St Johns with Sister Emma Campbell and a midwife from neonatal. As always, I took along gifts/requests which included supplies for medical photography, blankets (bought and hand knitted) plus items for the family room. A big thank you to Dawn Watson's mum for all her beautiful knitting. It is very much appreciated by the hospital and all the families affected. Nicola.
We are about to take delivery of two vehicles (we received funding for a 24month contract). This is an exciting development and will raise awareness on a daily basis for SANDS Lothians and make things easier when transporting goods to the shop , fundraisers, going to our premises in West Lothian and visiting the Borders General.
We will post photographs when all the livery has been completed on the cars. Dorothy

Forget Me Not Month news.
We have a young lad James who is working voluntary with us doing his Duke of Edinburgh Award. We met James through the YPI scheme and he has already helped serve teas and coffees and wash up after our remembrance service at Christmas. He is a keen gardener and we will be asking him to help us with our Forget Me Not seeds project.
What we plan to do is sell nice patio planters with your baby's name on it and a packet of Sylvia Forget Me Not Seeds. The Sylvia type are suitable for porch planters and it will be a nice thing for you to do for your baby. James will keep us right but think the seeds have to be sown May to September and they will bloom May/June 2015. It is a lovely positive thing you are doing to remember your baby and to watch the seed grow and then bloom will be very therapeutic. We will be selling them during Forget Me Not Month. I will post prices soon once we know the exact price of items required.
If you are interested in purchasing can you please email email@example.com
Thank you to the bereaved parents who came along for the first time to the Craiglockhart support group last week including a newly bereaved dad. It's not easy taking the first step but few regret it. Always a privilege to hear about your special baby(s)
We were made very welcome yesterday by the HR Unit, Corporate Training Team, Scottish Court Service receiving a cheque for the amazing amount of £755.55. The team pictured left to right, Albert Russell, Zoe Dillon, Caroline Martin (SANDS), Lynn Aitken, Lesley Powley and Ben Martin held a joint fundraiser for CLAPA and SANDS with both charities receiving an equal share of funds raised. The team were very touched by colleagues generosity on the day and delighted to have raised so much for 2 charities close to the teams heart. We would like to thank everyone involved in organising, baking, donating and to the HR Manager allowing their staff time to hold the fundraiser. Amazing amount raised for both charities, every pound will make a difference, thank you from all at SANDS Lothians xx
*** Forget Me Not Month 2014 ***
Hi all as you know we have our 'Forget Me not Month' yearly and in 2014 it will start on Sunday 30th March through to Wed 30th April.
We started this back in 2007 with 'Forget Me Not Week' and as it has proved so popular with our parents and supporters we changed it to Forget Me Not Month in 2012.
We always start our 'Forget me Not Month' on Mothering Sunday which is now a SANDS Lothians tradition.
More news on events planned will follow but we wanted you to know the dates for this year now, loving thoughts to all, Helen

A huge thank you to Carole Lomas and the 'Knutty Knitters' at Scottish Qualifications Authority who have been kindly knitting for us. The group of about 8 or 9 knitters meet fortnightly and are often seen knitting at their tea break and during lunch. They are going to continue to knit for us throughout the year. We are so grateful and know these blankets will give much comfort to bereaved parents in the future.

It is a pleasure to be involved and thanks need to go out to the Wood Family Trust for their investment in the initiative.
We received an email from a man a few weeks ago looking for help to trace the resting place of his mum`s little baby. Grave tracing is something SANDS Lothians has done for many years. Jeni (one of our counsellors) was able to inform the family of the location and plot number and received a lovely email from them. We are pleased to have been able to help and hope this brings a little comfort after all these years
You have just made my Mum a very happy old lady. She was at Dad for years to find out where Valerie was buried but he always said there was no way of doing so. Thank you so much as we now have somewhere we can go and visit and lay flowers which is all Mum ever wanted. She also said to thank you very much, she can`t believe how easy this has been.
Many thanks again Bobby

2014 - A New Year and lots of new plans for SANDS Lothians. We officially started back today and bringing lots of new things to SANDS Lothians which will benefit bereaved parents and their families in Edinburgh and the Lothians. The first changes come into effect immediately with Helen taking on a more responsible role in the Edinburgh Office and Nicola in West Lothian. I am excited about working with Helen and Nicola in their new roles and confident we will take SANDS Lothians to a higher level. Our Befrienders, Counsellors, Admin support and of course the many volunteers are all part of the team that help us give a very valuable service at SANDS Lothians. Thank you to all concerned. Dorothy
A newly bereaved parent came to chat yesterday and brought a very kind donation from her mum. Carla's mum Helen had been saving for her new grandchild and when he passed wanted the money to be split between SiMBA and SANDS Lothians - the charities that have supported her daughter. Thank you Helen for your thoughtfulness and generosity. We are so sorry for your loss.
Carla lost her little baby Joel in February. Our first conversation on the phone was significant as when we were chatting a tiny baby feather landed on her knee. Carla has now had so many feathers appear that she has started to collect them in a little glass bowl. We are here to support all the family at this sad time x
Plans are coming together for our annual service of remembrance. The church and hall are booked, the sound engineers and two choirs one of which is The Edinburgh Deaf Choir and Glitz choir who have supported our services well in the past. I have two parents who wish to take part and would really appreciate if I could get another two parents to take part.. The service is on Sunday 7th December at Craiglockhart Parish Church at 2pm. If you would like to take part please e mail email@example.com
We have received this statement from the Mortonhall Investigation Team.
I think it shows that no stone is being left unturned and as much as it is nerve wracking waiting on the report I am sure we would all agree that we want to feel confident that every detail has been investigated.
The preparation of Dame Elish’s report is underway. However, additional evidence has been submitted and new evidence discovered which now requires further investigation. Subject to the outcome of these investigations Dame Elish hopes to submit her report to the Chief Executive of the Council in February 2014. It is clearly important that Dame Elish considers all the evidence available to her before finalising her report.
Although the Council decision to commission an independent investigation was taken in January 2013, Dame Elish was unable to begin her investigation until May when the police investigation was completed.
'This has been such a rewarding placement. Nicola’s enthusiasm and passion for her job has made these last weeks an amazing experience. I am so grateful to her and all the parents that took the time to meet me and share their stories. It is through them that I have learnt the most. I have learnt about compassion, about communication, about kind gestures and words that can make such a difference and will always be remembered for those grieving the loss of a baby. It has been an incredible learning experience for my midwifery training and future career. Thank you SANDS Lothian team for making this possible.’

A big thank you goes to all who attended the Quiz Night Fundraiser at Lammies Bar in Fauldhouse. A great night was had by all and everyone attending raised £425 for SANDS Lothians, much thanks go to Jenni Cavanagh, Albert Mancini , Colin Cunningham & Ernie Orme. Thank you from us all at SANDS Lothians, the money raised will go towards helping bereaved parents within Edinburgh & Lothians.
For most - sunshine and summer makes them happy and picks them up but for newly bereaved parents it can be a difficult time. Lots of 'what should have been'. They had dreamed of walking their baby in the pram; showing their wee one off; holidays; beautiful sunny clothes to wear (that they might have already bought) and maternity leave in the sun. If you know someone in this position then send a text, drop off flowers, send a card, drop in or message and let them know you're thinking of them.
This old children's song has never been connected with bereavement but the second verse strikes a chord
Please ring 0131 622 6263 or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are finding things difficult no matter how long you have been bereaved. We are here to help you...

She set a target of £2000 and we are bowled over by the response. She has reached her target today...in only 2 weeks!!! Absolutely amazing news and a real boost as she prepares for her jump. Thank you Standard Life Investments Edinburgh staff and also Caledonian Envelopes for their large donations. Go Lee!

Hi all this is a copy of the latest update from Mortonhall Investigation Team.
The investigation continues with over 100 witnesses having been seen to date. We intend to carry out follow up interviews with key witnesses in November and December as well as meet parents who have come forward since the last interviews took place or were unable to make appointments earlier. The expert reports are being produced but the experts have not yet completed these. Once Dame Elish has received the reports she will interview the experts to determine whether further investigation is required. In addition, we are continuing to investigate the 245 individual cases so that we can provide parents with as much information as possible. This is a very large scale investigation involving the examination of many hundreds of documents, visits to crematoria across the country and interviews with many witnesses. Dame Elish considers it very important that she does not report before all possible evidence has

No.1 magazine have included us in their big summer charity awareness campaign and we will be featured in their magazine until the end of August. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of baby loss and the support available. No.1 magazine gets a minimum of 110,000 female readers across Scotland and WHSmith are promoting it as their focus magazine in the airports this summer guaranteeing lots of female reading. I am sure there will be many women read this and will either get support for themselves or perhaps others they know.
We are also pleased so say we are launching a new fundraiser event in September which you can all be part of. This is also being promoted in No.1 magazine to encourage others from further afield to join in with friends. The magazine will also have a link to our website and facebook page during the summer giving further information about our fun fundraiser. Keep an eye out for more about that later...or go and buy your own copy to find out more .

Our Operations Manager has been in talks with the council re a memorial bench at Craiglockhart for babies affected by Mortonhall.
THIS IS IN NO WAY a main memorial - this is something that some parents requested and SANDS Lothians were willing to purchase but the council have offered to pay for it. We have chosen the spot near the pond and the wording on the plaque will have reference to events at Mortonhall with the wording
Please be assured this is not Edinburgh City Councils official memorial for Mortonhall babies.

We are delighted at SANDS Lothians to be involved with the Youth Philanthropy Initiative in Scotland, as you know 2 schools won their presentation for us earlier this year and SANDS Lothians received £6,000. YPI is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness amongst young people about philanthropy and their local community. We are still working closely with a group of students who are organising a fundraiser for us which will be taking place in 2014. We very much appreciate the hard work the students do and the continuing support they are giving us at SANDS Lothians.
Our thoughts are with family and friends of Jak Trueman. A brave young man who sadly died yesterday at just 15 years of age. The love and strength he and his family have shown is breathtaking. We know no words can comfort them at this sad time but we hope knowing others are thinking of them gives some comfort over the following days, weeks and months. His legacy will live on through the many things that will come from his extraordinary fundraising xx

On behalf of SANDS Lothians, thank you Helen xx

The Mortonhall Working Group has met to discuss the memorial(s) for those affected by Mortonhall. There will be 4 designs which people will be able to vote on which they prefer and add comments. The designs will be made available from 31st January (for around 4 weeks) to view both online and in various locations around Edinburgh and the Lothians. Venues, dates and times will be confirmed soon. There will be a memorial at Mortonhall and another location still to be confirmed.
I appreciate this might not be everyone's wishes and I am aware there is little can be done to repair the damage and hurt, however, I hope the memorials will go some way to acknowledge those affected and will leave a lasting tribute to the babies and families.
Remember SANDS Lothians can support you during this time and we have many parents seeing one of our counsellors to help them work through their feelings. I will post with further information as it becomes available. Thank you. Nicola

Thank you to all parents who have helped and supported me through the last nineteen months with regards to the Mortonhall Scandal.
I think we should all be proud that the Scottish Government have assured us that this will never happen again in Scotland.
It has been a long difficult journey but we got the truth and as much as we may never know what happened to our precious babies ashes we have helped to change the law of the land and that is a true testament to the memory of our babies.
Sweet Dreams little ones.

UPDATE FROM DAME ELISH ANGIOLINI – 8 JANUARY 2015
In 2015, we continue with our scheduled programme of interviews with staff and former employees at crematoria across Scotland. A small number of new cases have been registered and there are now 13 crematoria involved in the investigation. We expect the investigation into the additional cases at Mortonhall to be complete by the end of January 2015 given that we had already interviewed staff there during the Mortonhall Investigation.
We understand that, for some parents, this important stage of collecting evidence and interviewing staff may cause anxiety as it delays their own participation in the process. As I indicated previously, it is important that I gather as many facts and records as possible before I meet parents in order that I am able to respond to their concerns. Evidence gathered during the interviews with parents is vital to my investigation and I will re-interview staff and former staff concerning specific information provided to me during those interviews as required.
All parents will shortly receive an information leaflet explaining what
to expect during the interview. Prior to the interviews, parents will be
provided with copies of all records held at that stage by the
It is likely that interviews with parents to discuss their individual
cases will commence in March. We have already met with Sands and with Forget Me Not Counselling to discuss the valued support they are providing to parents during the investigation. Our contact with SANDS Lothians and Mortonhall Ashes Action Committee continues. We have recently been informed that a new support group has been established, Baby Ashes Scotland, and I look forward to meeting their representatives to discuss how they can work with us to communicate with parents. I am also sharing updates with Lindsay Bruce of Thompson’s Solicitors and of course posting them on our webpage.
If any parent has questions or concerns please contact my team on 0300 244 2867 or email@example.com
Sunday 15th June 2014, Nicola Welsh "What an amazing day! I held the baton high with such pride in memory of all our babies. Special memories to cherish forever"
On behalf of SANDS Lothians staff, Directors and Trustees I would like to say how proud we are of Nicola (SANDS Lothians West Lothian project Supervisor) for being nominated by one of the West Lothian parents to carry the baton in Linlithgow yesterday.
This speaks volumes for the hard work and time that Nicola has given to bereaved families. So well deserved and thank you for carrying the baton high in memory of your precious little boy Theo and all babies of bereaved parents.
What a wonderful achievement and we are so privileged to have you as a member of our staff at SANDS Lothians.
Written on 14/6/14 - Tomorrow is a big day for me as I have the huge honour of carrying the Commonwealth baton. Nominated by Cathie Smyth (a bereaved parent) and my mother in law. I hope it gives some comfort to know that I will be carrying the baton in memory of all the babies loved and missed everyday. I will be bursting with pride knowing that for the small section in the baton's travels our babies will be remembered. Nicola x
We would like to say a massive thank you to The Wood Family Trust who manage the Youth Philanthropy Initiative in Scotland. YPI is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness amongst young people about philanthropy and their local community. Originating in Canada, YPI is now an international programme and is currently being delivered in 82 secondary schools across Scotland.
The pupils at St George's School and St Augustine's School chose SANDS Lothians as their charity and had to do a presentation on why the charity is in need of funds and what the funds will be used for. We are delighted that both schools won and received a cheque for £3,000 each for SANDS Lothians.
The funds will be used for us to continue and increase our Befriending help & support for bereaved parents and set up a new group for bereaved parents who go on to have another baby after having suffered a loss. All this would not be possible without the YPI and the hard work and commitment of all the students involved. Well done to all who took part we are very proud of you and look forward to working with you again in the future.
A big thank you to Mary Wallace from Humanist Society Scotland for sending us books to help children understand loss. I have read a number of these and they are just wonderful - 'Badger's parting gift' is particularly moving.
The report from Lord Bonomy and Infant Cremation Commission is released today, please click on the link below to read the full report. It is 323 pages long.

A very positive start to the year with many people contacting us interested in doing a fundraiser in 2015. I thought it would be a lovely idea to do our own take on the 12 days of Christmas in memory of our babies. Over the years I have read and heard of some interesting and beautiful ways to include your loved one in heaven in your Christmas traditions. I have made a list, in case anyone is looking for ideas, but please feel free to add to these. I encourage you to take a look on our facebook page to post a pic or post on our page something you do during the 12 days run up to Christmas. It may help lots of parents looking for ideas and bring us some comfort at this time of year. Nicola

Sadly been a busy week for us with newly bereaved parents getting in touch. Thankfully we are here to offer our services through befriending & counselling to help support parents through the grieving process for as long and as often as is required. We are working closely with St Johns in Livingston and RIE Simpsons with Neo Natal Unit and SiMBA. A Big thank you to some of our lovely volunteers form our SANDS Lothians charity shop who had a table at the Meadows Festival over the weekend and raised £752.72.
Excellent amount raised and many thanks to Jane, Fiona, Jeanette, Norma and Cathy, well done ladies as always from all at SANDS Lothians.
Our shop is situated in Sth Clerk Street in Edinburgh.
Our can collection at Tesco Corstorphine was a great success raising £201.50 on the day. We had a warm welcome in store and chatted to many customers some of which had lost a baby 45 years ago and in their words "you never forget your child that should be here too" From the school children at lunch time who popped their change in the can to the busy shoppers stopping to speak and tell us how a friend has been supported by us. It was a very rewarding afternoon for myself and Varrie in a personal way and for SANDS Lothians in raising awareness.
Big thanks to Tesco staff who done the beautiful knitting to be donated to Simpsons RIE and St John's, as you can see the lovely blankets, hats & mitts will be very appreciated by hospital staff and parents. On behalf of all at SANDS Lothians thank you xx

Last week Nicola, Pamela and Jeni presented the cold cot to St John's Hospital bereavement group. We hope that families in the future will benefit from having this in the family room as they will be able to spend longer with their baby in the room and over the following hours and days after giving birth. We know that every precious moment with your baby counts and everyone's time they want to spend is different. It's all about giving bereaved parents choices. St John's Hospital work very hard to do their best to support families in this awful situation and are very active in doing all they can to learn how best to help and support. They actively encourage parents to seek support from SANDS Lothians which is a big reason in the rise of support needed in West Lothian. We will continue to communicate regularly to make sure we are doing all we can for families facing the loss of a baby.
A big thank you to Ros Lowrie and her fundraiser in East Linton which raised the money to be able to purchase this equipment.
Special thanks to James McGhee and Sainsbury's for their generous toy donation for our Parent & Toddler Group that meets monthly at Craigsfarm. The children will love having new toys to play with. James works for Sainsbury's and they also supply fresh flowers for our office. A great example of workplaces supporting their employees and acknowledging their loss.
A big thank you to Manager and staff at Clydesdale Bank, Sighthill Branch for donating a couple of the Large Presentation Cheques to us. We always like to get photos with our Fundraisers which makes the large cheques much appreciated. Nice to see you all today. Thank You
A huge thank you to Livingston Round Table who came along to our new premises in West Lothian on Monday 13th May to present us with a cheque for £870. An amazing amount of money which will help us secure our premises for the future. There will hopefully be an article in the West Lothian Courier about it soon too.
I am sure you will agree our SANDS Lothians Christmas Tree is looking beautiful this year as always. Most poignant for bereaved parents as each decoration represents a much loved, much wanted baby. Special thanks to Gillian Ferguson for dressing the tree with love and care. Thoughts with all as we move into this festive time of year from all at SANDS Lothians xx
We want to wish every single person running during Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2014 our best. You should all be very proud and we hope you have a great run in the event you have entered.

Our new premises at Craigsfarm in West Lothian is now ready and will hold its first support meeting tomorrow night. It's been a busy few months and stressful at times but it is finally ready and looks fantastic. A huge thank you to everyone who has made it possible and helped out. Too many to mention but a few stand out... Sam Meldrum, for decorating both rooms in his own time; everyone who donated sofas and furniture; Pamela Mallon for finding the premises, organising the lease and a heap of other stuff; staff at Criagsfarm who have opened the building at the weekends, accomodated carpet fitters and furniture removals (a fire door had to be removed as the sofas wouldn't fit!!) and all the staff at SANDS Lothians for supporting everything we do. Our support out West now includes a monthly support meeting, a subsequent pregnancy support group, a mother and toddler group, regular meetings with St Johns hospital and two days counselling. Anyone can attend our meetings whether newly bereaved or longer ago. You can access our services at any point and we welcome anyone affected by the loss of a baby. Nicola

We will be reading our precious babies names out at the service so please do let us know if you are unable to attend but would still like your baby's name to be read. You can do this in person at the service for your baby xx
Due to the solemn nature of our service we respectfully ask that no babies or young children are in attendance. Thank You

On behalf of SANDS Lothian’s Directors and Trustees
We are writing to inform you of some important
changes to the Organisation and our strategy for 2015.
DOROTHY MAITLAND who I am sure you are all aware has most recently suffered from a variety of health issues will retire from her role as Operations Manager of SANDS Lothian's.
Dorothy has been a passionate stalwart for SANDS Lothian's for
so many years it is hard to really capture the many achievements and
developments that she has overseen in this short announcement. Suffice is to say that her involvement has greatly enriched the services of the organisation and on behalf of all the Directors and Trustees with whom she has worked over the years we offer her our greatest thanks and appreciation for all she has done.
Although her last official day will be 30 November 2014 Dorothy will
run the Memorial Service for us on 7 December 2014 and that will be
her final duty in her role as Operations Manager.
With effect from 6 JANUARY 2015 I am also absolutely delighted to
announce the appointment of NICOLA WELSH into the role of OPERATIONS MANAGER. Nicola has, in a relatively short period of time, established quite excellent services in West Lothian as well as and she has an infectious enthusiasm in everything she does. She has accepted the appointment and takes up the role having given up her teaching career which we see as a wonderful commitment to the organisation. I am sure you will join me in wishing her well in her new role. In the interim period, during December, Nicola will deal with queries as best she can whilst still working in her teaching role. An updated organisational will apply from January 2015.
Whilst writing I wanted to take the opportunity to also thank you all
for all your efforts, fundraisers and support during 2014. The organisation starts 2015 in an extremely strong position and we have some exciting plans for 2015 and look forward to working with you all to ensure the excellent support we give parents continues and grows in 2015.
For and on behalf of the Trustees

It is now three weeks since The Mortonhall Report was released.
I would like to thank Edinburgh City Council for acting so quickly back in 2012 bearing in mind they met with me within days of me raising concerns to the new Manager. I also applaud them for commissioning Dame Elish Angiolini to investigate Mortonhall. Dame Elish produced a thorough and honest report which for many has been extremely difficult to take in but it is the truth and that is what SANDS Lothians asked for. The council have now set up a working party to address the 22 recommendations that Dame Elish gave.
SANDS Lothians want to give support to all bereaved family's affected by Mortonhall. Please do not hesitate to contact us on 0131 622 6263.
Lord Bonomys report is imminent and I hope that families throughout Scotland who are affected in the same way as Mortonhall will get their answers too.
Thinking of all at this time. Dorothy Maitland, Operations Manager, SANDS Lothians.
We have had many people doing fundraisers for us over the past few weeks which has been wonderful. The total amount raised for us since Sunday 10th March is £8,295.56. This is a fabulous achievement and all money will be used for Befriending & Counselling in Edinburgh & Lothians. A big thank you to all our supporters.
