The Team

Dorothy Maitland, Operations Manager:
I first contacted SANDS Lothians in 1986 after the death of my twin daughter, Kaelen. I was not sure that a support group would help me but was willing to try anything. After I picked up the telephone and spoke to the SANDS Lothians contact, I felt somebody really knew what I was going through and at last I did not feel so isolated. I started attending meetings which were a great comfort to me. I soon became a member of the Management Committee and in 1990 I took over as Group Co-ordinator. I find the work that I do here very rewarding and see it as a tribute to my daughter Kaelen. I know that I am helping parents and their families to see a light at the end of the tunnel which, when newly bereaved, you can never imagine will ever happen.

Ruth Wilson,
Bereavement Counsellor:

I have been part of the support team at SANDS Lothians working as a counsellor. Having trained as a social worker, my first job was with an adoption society working with both birth and adoptive parents. After retiring in 1997, I pursued a long term ambition to return to university and study to become a counsellor. I find it extremely satisfying working closely with people in a helping role.

Christine MacKay, Administrator:

I have been with SANDS Lothians since October 2007 and have previously been employed by various other charities in an administrative role. I first became aware of SANDS many years ago through a friend and knew of the invaluable support offered to bereaved parents and families. Since joining SANDS Lothians I have become even more aware of the important work carried out by the team and how much their support is appreciated by those who have sadly lost a baby.

Jennifer Winton, Senior Befriender:
My first contact with SANDS was in 1987 when I approached the organisation for support after the premature birth and death of my twin daughters, Andrea and Amy, 23 weeks into my second pregnancy. At this time I had a 3 year old daughter and in 1989 gave birth to a son, 18 months after the death of my twins. The support I received was invaluable and I am pleased to be part of the team in Edinburgh who offer a variety of services to families in the Lothians who experience the death of a baby.
